The One-Way Door

Five dungeons in Grim Dawn only open for a single-use key, and none of them let you leave and come back — here's what it takes to craft one and what's actually behind each door.

The situation

A key that only opens once, for a dungeon you can't walk back out of

Most of Cairn is forgiving about mistakes. Die in an open zone and you respawn at the last shrine, riftgate out, restock, and try again. The five Skeleton Key dungeons don't work that way. Once you're through the sealed gate, there's no riftgate exit and no reset — the only ways out are clearing the dungeon or dying. Quit to town partway through, and the section resets; you'll need another key to try again.

That single-use design is deliberate, not a bug people complain about for nothing. It's also why the key itself is built around one of the rarer crafting materials in the game, so getting in is a real commitment, not a formality.

The method

Getting the blueprint, then the key itself

01

Get the blueprint first

The blueprint is normally handed to you by Kalderos on completing the Descent into Torment quest chain, which starts near the Arkovian Undercity in Broken Hills and ends on level 3 of the Steps of Torment. If you've missed or skipped that questline, the blueprint can also be bought outright from Benevald, a hidden merchant north of the Blood Grove.

02

Craft the key: one recipe, one rare ingredient

Once you have the blueprint, any Blacksmith can craft a Skeleton Key from Blood of Ch'thon, Corpse Dust, and Ectoplasm, for a token 1 iron. Corpse Dust and Ectoplasm aren't hard to come by — both drop reliably from Undead enemies, including inside the Steps of Torment itself. Blood of Ch'thon is the bottleneck: it only drops from Chthonic and Bloodsworn heroes and bosses, which makes the Blood Grove, the Village of Darkvale run, and the Depraved Sanctuary (Salazar and his Harbingers) the most consistent farming spots.

03

A few keys come free, and one NPC can shortcut the grind

Kalderos hands you a key along with the blueprint when Descent into Torment finishes. Mogdrogen gives one when you start Cleanse the Corruption, and Riggs gives one when you start Paying Debts in Forgotten Gods. Separately, Horrus, a Cursed Smith on an elevated platform north of the Gates of Necropolis portal, can convert Tainted Brain Matter into an Ancient Heart, an Ancient Heart into Blood of Ch'thon, and craft the full key himself — all for iron rather than farmed materials, at a steeper cost than a normal Blacksmith.

The board

What's actually behind each door

Steps of Torment — Act 2, entrance in southern Broken Hills

The first and easiest of the five. The dungeon has five levels total; levels 1 through 3 are freely accessible, and the key unlocks the Gates of Anguish leading to levels 4 (Suffering) and 5 (Anguish) — the sealed, one-way section. Undead-populated throughout.

Port Valbury — Act 3, accessed via an Aetherial Rift beyond the Detonation Site in The Conflagration

An above-ground zone rather than an underground one, overrun with Aetherials. The key unlocks the gate into Port Valbury: Foundation, the sealed portion.

Bastion of Chaos — Act 4, entrance in the Necropolis Interior

Four levels, entirely Chthonian. Level 1 is open; the key unlocks the Bastion Gates leading into levels 2 through 4, which make up the sealed section.

The Feral Thicket, in the Ancient Grove — Act 5, southeast corner of Ugdenbog (Ashes of Malmouth)

Beast-populated. The key opens the way into the Feral Thicket, which in turn leads deeper into the Tainted Wood.

The Tomb of the Heretic — Act 7, accessed via the Lost Oasis (Forgotten Gods)

The newest and by most accounts the hardest of the five.

Rough difficulty order: Steps of Torment, then Bastion of Chaos, then Port Valbury, then the Ancient Grove, then the Tomb of the Heretic.

The mixup

Two things worth knowing before you go in

The devotion shrines aren't worth rushing in for. All five dungeons contain a devotion shrine somewhere, but every one of them sits in the freely accessible section before the sealed gate — none are behind the part that actually needs a key. If a shrine is your only goal, you don't need to spend a key to get it.

“Quit to menu” is the same as dying, mechanically. Because there's no riftgate inside the sealed section, leaving through the menu doesn't preserve your progress the way it would in a normal zone. Treat entering as committing to finish the run in one sitting; if you have to step away mid-run, expect to need a fresh key when you come back.

Summary

  1. Skeleton Keys are single-use and open five sealed, one-way dungeon sections: Steps of Torment, Bastion of Chaos, Port Valbury, the Ancient Grove's Feral Thicket, and the Tomb of the Heretic.
  2. The blueprint comes from completing Descent into Torment, or can be bought from Benevald north of the Blood Grove.
  3. The recipe is one Blood of Ch'thon, one Corpse Dust, one Ectoplasm, craftable at any Blacksmith for 1 iron — Blood of Ch'thon is the real bottleneck, best farmed from Chthonic bosses in the Blood Grove, Darkvale, or the Depraved Sanctuary.
  4. Kalderos, Mogdrogen, and Riggs each hand you a free key at specific quest points, and Horrus at the Gates of Necropolis can craft one for iron if you're out of materials.
  5. Each dungeon's devotion shrine sits in the open section before the locked gate, and quitting mid-run resets the sealed portion just like dying would.
