DENAR · CHRONICLE
The Quillwisp of Drakon Ekspar
How the thing behind the bar came to be there, as best as Kaldor tells it.
The Telling
North of Greybear's Rest, past the last marked road, the land turns wrong. The old Denarian tribes called it Drakon Ekspar — demon land, roughly, though no living tongue renders it kindly — and gave it a wide berth for longer than anyone alive remembers why. Kaldor never had much patience for wide berths.
He went in chasing a rumor: a trader's tale of lights that wrote themselves across the night sky in a script no one could read. Three days into the blighted reaches, past ground that stayed black even under noon sun, he found the source — not a demon at all, but something smaller and stranger, curled inside the ribcage of something that had been a demon a very long time ago.
It didn't fight him. It didn't flee. It just looked up — if a wisp of ink and borrowed light can be said to look — and, near as Kaldor could tell, seemed relieved to have company. He wrapped it in an old flask and carried it home, more out of curiosity than any plan for what to do with a spirit that finished your sentences before you'd decided how they went.
It's lived behind the bar ever since. Doesn't eat, doesn't sleep, and never once complained about the company — though it has opinions about how a good story ought to end, and isn't shy about improving on the truth when the truth runs short. Kaldor calls it the Quillwisp. It's the reason half of what's written on these walls reads better than it happened.
